The avenues of Florence ("i viali di Firenze") are famous for the quantity of traffic they have to endure every day.
Yet behind the incessant traffic there is a discreet area that has its own characteristics. Many buildings are from the nineteenth century, at the time of the economic recovery, of the expansion of Florence when it was the capital of Italy and in the years after.
They tell of that part of the bourgeois, wealthy city, which had made in its image solid structures, without frills, more or less decorated, flashy according to its means; more or less large villas, maybe a little secluded from the road, with a garden also nineteenth-century; apartment houses, always decent, and perhaps not so badly done from an architectural point of view; more often, banal if not outright bad taste, "good things of bad taste" as poet Gozzano wrote, the good bad taste of a society that believed itself to be in reason and was not ashamed to show it.
The avenue is dedicated to Antonio Gramsci, philosopher and founder of the Italian Communist party, who died in prison during the fascist period. In reality this area couldn't be further from the definition of popular, let alone communist. In fact, when it was built, the avenue was given the name Viale Principe Eugenio, one of the scions of the ruling Savoy family, and it suited it perfectly. It was therefore an "up" area, the memory of which is not difficult to trace out, precisely in the edifices of the area.
Therefore, as a paradigm of the city and highly significant, representative, this stretch of avenue has always interested me. Especially in the afternoon light, which ends at the outer side, the architectures are highlighted against the background of the sky, architectures which if they are not so ugly actually have something interesting, traces of the past Florentine glory: gables of windows, mouldings, fake serena stone, and even the colors of these buildings maintain something of those of the ancient city, of which they are almost a posthumous citation, also this fake, which occurred when the artistic glory of the city had long since faded.
Today it is one of the most secret places. One imagines double glazing on the windows, which in any case will almost always have to be closed, given the exhaust fumes from the vehicles that flow incessantly, from five in the morning to two at night. Behind those facades, those closed windows, it is difficult to imagine a life. It is even more reserved than in the nineteenth century, and one badly guesses how anyone can live inside these edifices.
The flood of cars, which at cadence invades the avenue, following the rhythm of the traffic lights, gets in the middle and almost confiscates it, from the use of the inhabitants and pedestrians. Only the side part of the avenue sees some passers-by, usually people who have stumbled upon it by chance, or some resident walking their dog or going visiting the shops.
From this point of view the avenue is very quiet. There are few homes, villas of the time of Florence capital are still standing, but often no one lives there anymore, they have been transformed into the headquarters of banks, finance companies or various institutions.
It's a transit area, no more and no less than that of the "Sun Highway" (Autostrada del Sole) between Florence and Bologna, and of a highway it has the characteristics; except that there are not even service stations to stop during the journey, and parking is anyway a challenge.
There's no way to fully understand this area. Progress, in the name of which the old walls had been demolished to make room for a very wide avenue, where all the horse-drawn carriages of the bourgeois could enter, has eaten up the lives of the bourgeois who inhabited the area, making it unlivable, and the serene detachment with which that world saw the society, because internal combustion engines have had a very different impact from the carriage horses. The facades of the houses are now inscrutable, the walls of the edifices are silent and inert, impenetrable, and the evening that advances on the avenue only makes them even more enigmatic and incomprehensible.
